Pharmaceutical Hard Capsule Dissolution Equivalence
By EMBO CAPS by Suheung
The purpose of this white paper is to compare the equivalence of empty pharmaceutical hard capsules with various traditional raw materials such as gelatin and non-traditional vegetable hydrocolloids.
Background
Empty hard capsules are widely used as a dosage delivery system in the pharmaceutical industry. Gelatin or Hypromellose (HPMC) are used as the shell raw material in the majority of pharmaceutical applications for various reasons, including their unique thermo-reversibility characteristics, recognised safety profiles and consistent availability of supply.
Gelatin comprises the majority of the composition of an empty gelatin hard capsule followed by water as the two main ingredients.
Similarly, Hypromellose comprises the majority of the composition of a Hypromellose hard capsule followed by water as the two main ingredients. Other ingredients in both types of capsules such as colourants and processing aids make up very little of the overall capsule composition.
