The French government has banned the use of anti-malarial hydroxychloroquine as an experimental treatment for Covid-19 in a statement.

This comes one day after the French healthcare authorities – Haute Autorité de Santé – advised against the use of hydroxychloroquine in routine clinical care and halted its clinical trials of the drug.

This decision comes after the World Health Organization temporarily suspended all of its trials of the antimalarial. This followed a study published in the Lancet last week showing that hydroxychloroquine had no benefit in Covid-19 patients.
