Norway-based aluminium producer Norsk Hydro has reached an important construction milestone for a recycling plant it is developing in the US state of Michigan.
Hydro has now completed the roof installation for the main building of the new $150m facility, located in the village of Cassopolis in Cass County, meaning the construction should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Once completed, the new Cassopolis facility will have the capacity to produce 120,000 tonnes of recycled aluminium extrusion ingot per year. The project will create 70 new jobs, according to Hydro, in roles such as production, process administration and materials management.
The factory is intended to meet growing demand for recycled construction materials, particularly in the production of electric vehicles (EVs). It will be the first large-scale production facility for Hydro’s form of recycled aluminium, which consists of at least 75% post-consumer scrap.
Michigan is the historic heart of the US automotive industry and is still the location of the global headquarters of the US’s ‘big three’: Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. President Joe Biden has been keen to incentivise the major automotive companies and others to invest heavily in EV production, particularly in mid-western states.
Hydro employs almost 6,000 people in the US, more than any other Norwegian company, and operates more than 20 manufacturing facilities across the country. The company already has a footprint in Michigan, having operated a product and equipment testing centre in Zeeland since 1996.
