1. Diabetes – 727 mentions
Results of a long-running clinical trial on the effect of lifestyle changes following the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes were published recently. The trial found that small reductions in alcohol intake in the first year could increase life expectancy.
Reducing alcohol intake by only two or more units a week was associated with lowering the risk of cardiovascular diabetes.
The trial also found that lowering the daily calorie intake by at least 300kcal was associated with reducing the risk of all-cause mortality.
Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes also trended on Twitter during the month, with mentions of 100 and 94, respectively.

2. Heart disease – 676 mentions
The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition appointed by the UK government, has advised adults to reduce the risk of heart disease by not consuming more than 10% of saturated fat in their daily calorie intake. The committee also recommended to replace the use of saturated fats with unsaturated fats such as those found in fish and olives.
However, the guidance was criticised as being outdated by NHS cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra.

3. Bariatric Surgery – 176 mentions
Bariatric or weight loss surgery is a set of procedures performed on individuals who suffer from obesity. The surgery is considered as a treatment option for people with body mass index (BMI) more than 40kg/m².
Many patients hesitate to undergo the surgery due to possible harmful side effects following the procedure. However, surgeons and researchers have been trying to instil confidence about its safety and effectiveness.
