The region now ranks in first for the total number of trials taking place, compared to its third placed ranking in 2010.

North America
Despite being placed fifth, North America still saw an increase in the number of gastrointestinal trials.
The region saw a 32% increase in the number of trials.
The United States made up 79.9% the largest proportion of trials taking place in the region.
Canada and Mexico also made up a large amount of the trials taking place with 16.1% and 4%, respectively.
South and Central America
South and Central America saw the biggest decrease in gastrointestinal trials.
The number of trials in the region fell by 15% between 2010 and 2020.
Brazil saw the largest percentage of trials taking place in the region with 34.2%.
