The UK pharma industry saw a drop of 25% in overall deal activity during Q4 2018, when compared with the last four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 21 deals worth $772.16m were announced in Q4 2018, compared to the last four-quarter average of 28 deals.

Venture financing was the leading category in the quarter with 11 deals which accounted for 52.4% of all deals.

In second place was M&A with six deals, followed by private equity with four transactions, respectively accounting for 28.6% and 19.05% of overall deal activity in the country’s pharma industry during the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the UK pharma industry with total deals worth $373.57m, while venture financing and private equity deals totalled $270.67m and $127.92m, respectively.

The United Kingdom pharma industry deals in Q4 2018: Top deals

The top five pharma deals accounted for 90.4% of the overall value during Q4 2018.

The combined value of the top five pharma industry deals stood at $697.73m, against the overall value of $772.16m recorded for the quarter. The top announced UK pharma industry deal tracked by GlobalData in Q4 2018 was Covis Pharma’s $371m asset transaction with AstraZeneca.

In second place was the $200m private equity deal with Roivant Sciences by NovaQuest Capital Management and RTW Investments and in third place was Centerbridge Partners and Och-Ziff Capital Management’s $65.73m private equity deal with BMI Healthcare.

The $31m venture financing of Fluidic Analytics by Amadeus Capital Partners, Business Growth Fund, Delin Capital Asset Management, Draper Esprit and IQ Capital Partners and GlaxoSmithKline, Longwood Fund Management, Sofinnova Partners and SV Health Investors’ venture financing of Sitryx Therapeutics for $30m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
