Avian influenza, commonly referred to as bird flu, is a viral infection that primarily affects birds, especially poultry such as chickens and turkeys. Avian influenza viruses belong to the influenza A virus family and are classified based on surface proteins: hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). Avian influenza viruses primarily circulate among birds and can spread through direct contact with infected birds, their feces, respiratory secretions, or contaminated surfaces.
