In the week between Sunday 17 and Saturday 23 January, 498 companies operating in the pharma market posted 10,177 jobs, according to GlobalData’s jobs analytics tool. This represents a 36% decrease on the previous week, 10 to 16 January, when 15,846 jobs were posted.
Of these, 62% (6,315) were classified as junior or entry-level jobs. A key theme of the junior and entry level jobs was artificial intelligence. For instance, Chase Sun Pharma, last week’s top recruiter, was hiring for roles like AI chip and big data engineers, while Johnson & Johnson (J&J) was hiring for data scientist roles.
Between 17 and 23 January, 1,002 jobs were posted at the senior level. Many companies were hiring at the social director level, including PTC Therapeutics, AbbVie, Jazz Pharmaceuticals and Boehringer Ingelheim. Regulation was a key focus of the jobs posted at the senior level. For instance, Tokyo-headquartered Otsuka Holdings advertised a director of federal government affairs and advocacy in the US, while Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) is hiring a senior director of regulatory affairs in Shanghai, China. Growth in the Chinese market has been a key focus of BMS since it completed its acquisition of Celgene in late 2019.
Spotlight on J&J
Like last week, Chase Sun Pharma is the top recruiter between 17 and 23 January with 3,665 jobs posted. But another company on a hiring spree is J&J, which posted 290 jobs in the past week. This follows on from 471 jobs posted between 10 and 16 January.
Of the 190, 132 are in the North American market, 82 are in Europe and 53 are in Asia-Pacific. Many of these jobs across the world, but particularly in the US and Europe, are focused in sales, marketing and regulation. For example, J&J has posted a job opportunity for a senior manager of global healthcare professional communication, as well as a couple of sales consultant roles across the US. This makes sense given that J&J is on the verge of publishing Phase III results for its Covid-19 vaccine and then commercialising that globally. In addition, the company has recently published promising results from other trials and received regulatory approval for its long-acting HIV treatment.
J&J’s – are also hiring in key roles. Similarly to J&J, many of these are in marketing and sales, including Janssen’s postings for multiple US sales specialists for certain therapeutic areas, such as immunology and cardiovascular diseases.
