Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the pharmaceutical industry was 2,934 in Q3 2024, versus 6,661 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 4% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Contemporary Amperex Technology filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the pharmaceutical industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 36 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 30 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Roche with 35 environmental sustainability patent filings, Chinese Academy of Sciences (27 filings), and AbbVie (15 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 21% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the pharmaceutical industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 21%, followed by China (16%) and Japan (10%). The share represented by the US was 10% higher than the 11% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
