Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is when the teeth are broken down due to the acids made by bacteria from food and sugar. Currently, the Pharma Intelligence Center database covers clinical trials that include tooth decay and provides many key analyses, including trial status, phase, and location.

When looking at these clinical trials, it can be said that the majority have been completed (72.7%), with ongoing clinical trials following (17.7%) (Figure 1). Also, over 91% of tooth decay clinical trials are in late-stage trial phases, with 48.3% in Phase II, 21.4% in Phase III, and 21.8% in Phase IV (Figure 2). Lastly, based on location, the US and India have the most clinical trials (18.5% and 11.8%). Brazil, Iran, Thailand, China, Egypt, Germany, the UK, and Australia round out the top 10 countries with tooth decay clinical trials (Figure 3).
