Such issues are not surprising when one considers that smoke in theatre – caused by the thermal destruction of tissue – can contain pollutants such as benzene, hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde and bioaerosols. In addition the smoke also causes practical issues in theatre, obscuring the view of medical professionals.
The issue is also one that often doesn’t receive appropriate attention when medical facilities consider the well being and training of their staff, with a recent academic survey suggesting that 49% of laser surgery professionals and 44% of electrosurgery professionals had never received training on the hazards of surgical smoke.
NTI have tackled this problem through the introduction of its NEBULAE® SRS system, which filters and recycles the air in surgical theatres, removing potentially harmful contaminates in a closed-loop environment and reducing CO2 gas usage.
The system consists of the main Nebulae device, disposable tubing with a connected filter and a separate gas warmer used for the reintroduction of cleaned and filtered air back into the system.

NTI’s NEBULAE® Smoke Removal System (SRS) is the only closed-loop laparoscopic smoke removal device that can maintain pneumoperitoneum while removing surgical smoke and contaminants from the patient. The device is able to pair with any standard luer-connection laparoscopic trocar and any brand insufflator necessary in robotic or laparoscopic procedures that require insufflation and electrocautery.
The device operation manages a continuous removal of surgical smoke and CO2 from the patient and returns clean, warmed gas back into the patient through two fluid filters, a carbon filter and ULPA filter, thus removing 99.999% of contaminants, without disturbing the pneumoperitoneum pressure. The NEBULAE SRS has performed in general minimally invasive surgery, gynecological, transplant, colorectal (TAMIS), bariatric, pediatric, and thoracic surgeries.
