First Covid-19 death in Taiwan
A 61-year-old man with a history of diabetes and hepatitis B had died in Taiwan after contracting Covid-19, marking the first novel coronavirus-related death in the country.
The man had not travelled to China recently and was a taxi driver with clients primarily from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. One of the family members of the deceased person was also diagnosed with the new coronavirus infection.
Currently, the total number of cases in the country reached 20, including these two new cases.
Covid-19 on Diamond Princess cruise
Chartered flights carrying more than 300 Americans who were on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan have taken off from Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
A total of about 400 US citizens were on the ship and at least 40 tested positive for the new coronavirus.
On 17 February, the US Departments of State and Health and Human Services announced that after citizens disembarked the ship, 14 passengers, who underwent tests two to three days earlier, were reported to have tested positive.
These patients were asymptomatic and have been isolated in a special containment area on the evacuation aircraft.
Citizens returning to the US will be subjected to 14-day quarantine at Travis Air Force Base in California and Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.
People developing symptoms in flight along with positive cases will be isolated on the flights and sent to an appropriate location for continued isolation and care.
Furthermore, Israel Ministry of Health reported that three of its citizens on the Diamond Princess ship have tested positive for the new coronavirus. These patients have been transferred to a medical centre in Japan.
Israel is considering sending a flight to fly back the remaining Israelis, who have not tested positive, from Japan.
The Philippines authorities have also confirmed 16 more positive cases on board the ship, taking the total number of infected Filipinos on the cruise to 27.
To date, a total of 454 people on the ship have contracted Covid-19. This includes two new cases of Indian nationals, which take the country’s total onboard to five.
