The American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) are uniting to create a single online source for credible cancer information.

News of the collaboration was announced at ASCO’s annual meeting which is underway in Chicago until 4 June.

The merged website, Cancer.org, is intended to help patients and the cancer community have confidence that they are getting the best information available.

“At ASCO, our members see every day how confusing and painful it can be for too many patients and families as they try to make sense of cancer information while they’re navigating a diagnosis and treatment,” said ASCO CEO Clifford Hudis.

“This expanded partnership with ACS will improve our ability to get engaging and easy-to-understand cancer information in front of many more patients and their families, right when they need it most.”

In support of the Biden Cancer Moonshot, an initiative aimed at driving down the cancer mortality rate and preventing four million deaths by 2047, ACS and ASCO said its partnership would also help reduce duplication and find efficiencies to improve the experience of people facing cancer.

Dr. Danielle Carnival, deputy assistant to the President for the Cancer Moonshot initiative said the collaboration aligns with the Moonshot initiative and will give more patients, families, and caregivers across America potentially life-saving information at their fingertips.

In 2022, ACS and ASCO launched a partnership to provide shared content on cancer survivorship, long-term side effects of treatment, fertility, and post-traumatic stress through Cancer.org. The organisations said this partnership ultimately paved the way for the unification of its online resources.

The Democratic party’s 2024 election manifesto has pledged to build on the foundation of the Obama-Biden Administration’s Cancer Moonshot to “break down silos and accelerate research into cancer and cancer treatments” with the creation of an agency with the sole mission of finding new cures and treatments for cancer and other diseases.
