The top five companies accounted for 5% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Regeneron Pharmaceuticals filed the most Covid-19 patents within the pharmaceutical industry in Q3 2024. The company filed 11 Covid-19-related patents in the quarter, compared with 6 in the previous quarter. It was followed by AstraZeneca with 8 Covid-19 patent filings, French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (7 filings), and University of California (6 filings) in Q3 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 52% share of total patent filings
The largest share of Covid-19 related patent filings in the pharmaceutical industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 52%, followed by China (10%) and Australia (4%). The share represented by the US was 14% higher than the 38% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
