The Astellas European Foundation has awarded $150,000 under the 2014 Functional Urology and Uro-Gynaecology Grant to Dr Marianne Gamper for conducting a study, which will be undertaken in Austria and Switzerland.
The project will quantify marker levels to identify the potential relationship between overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) and bladder pain syndrome, also known as interstitial cystitis.
The project team represents different centres including Kantonsspital Frauenfeld and ETH Zürich in Switzerland, and Medizinische Universität Graz in Austria.
According to the foundation, the project led by Gamper and the research team has the potential to verify a hypothesis that could lead to improved early diagnosis and more targeted treatment for OAB and bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis patients.
Gamper said the project is designed to identify, quantify, and compare molecular marker levels in patient samples and associate the results with the severity of clinical findings.
“The prize money directly provides the essential financial support for our laboratory work, thereby enabling us to continue our fundamental and important research on debilitating chronic bladder diseases,” Gamper said.
