In the week between Sunday 10 and Saturday 16 January, 676 companies in the pharma industry posted 15,846 jobs, according to GlobalData’s jobs analytics tool. This represents an 108% increase on the previous week, 3 to 9 January, when 7,610 jobs were posted.
Only 1,091 of the 15,846 jobs posted were classified as senior level jobs, whereas there were 11,333 jobs posted at entry and junior level. One example of a company on a senior hiring spree this week is Sanofi. The French pharma company has posted 20 jobs at the senior level, including 13 regional business director roles in various indications.
Similar to last week, the most common theme across jobs posted involve digital media, sales and marketing. For instance, Bayer is advertising for multiple sales specialists and consultants in the cardiorenal space across the US. This makes sense as the US Food and Drug Administration recently granted priority review to a new drug application for Bayer’s finerenone, which is currently in Phase III studies for chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes.
Top recruiter of the week: Chase Sun Pharma
AstraZeneca, the top recruiter of the week between 3 and 9 January, was between 10 and 16 January, despite posting 100 more jobs than the previous week. Instead the top recruiter this week is Chase Sun Pharma, which is headquartered in Tianjin, China and provides a range of services, including traditional Chinese medicine, finished drugs, raw materials and medical devices.
Chase Sun Pharma has posted 3,581 jobs between 10 and 16 January. All but 66 of these jobs are to be based in China, with six posted in the US, 26 in Europe (including Russia), and eight in Africa, particularly Nigeria.
It is not entirely clear why Chase Sun Pharma is suddenly posting thousands of jobs, but the company has been developing and studying a therapy for Covid-19 pneumonia.

By GlobalDataHiring spree for plasma-focused companies
After posting 291 jobs last week, Spanish-headquartered Grifols has continued with its hiring spree this week with 374 jobs posted. Many of these are directly linked to Grifols’ work in producing plasma-based therapies derived from donations, including for Covid-19. For instance, the company is hiring phlebotomists to support plasma collection, plasma processors and donor centre technicians across the US.
Similarly, US-based CSL Behring is also hiring phlebotomists, donor support and plasma processing technicians across the US to support its work on plasma-based therapeutics. CSL is part of an alliance with various global players in the plasma industry that is looking to develop hyperimmune therapies from blood plasma for Covid-19; a US Phase III trial of these therapies began in October 2020. Between 10 and 16 December, CSL posted 238 jobs, which is an increase of eight from the week before.
